It All Begins With Scrambled Eggs

As I wrote previously I’m in the midst of a transformation, changing many different things about myself.

One of those things is saying “I Can’t” before even investigating a problem or a situation or just assuming that the solution is too hard for me to figure out.

I have to remember I’m a very intelligent and resourceful person, and that saying “I Can’t” right away also will affect my kids and they will start saying it. And I don’t want that at all.

So today I started this process by making scrambled eggs, a simple things to most people but to me I always thought was difficult. I pulled up a recipe online, followed it and made them.

It’s a small victory but it felt great accomplishing something that I previously assumed I couldn’t, so now I can make the kids eggs on the weekends.

I am going to start incorporating this process into all parts of my life in every day. I can’t wait to see what the change will be on my self confidence. And my well being.

I’m going to start martial arts training in addition to my cardio and regular workouts.

It’s something I’ve always been interested in, I love MMA, and at 43 I feel like it’s time. Kickboxing and Brazilian jujutsu.

Also going to be getting my first tattoo when we get back from vacation, again something I’ve always wanted to do, but I never had anything meaningful enough to me to tattoo and I felt like I was not in good enough shape.

I’m in the best place I’ve ever been in with my wife and we have embarked on some new experiences as well.

I feel like a caterpillar that is coming out of its shell and morphing into a butterfly. That’s the best analogy I could come up with.

Im so excited and can’t wait to see where this will all take me!!

Big Changes

Hey everyone, sorry it’s been a while since I’ve posted, With everything going on in the world, I have lost track of time, days and weeks go by quickly.

I have a few things I would like to share, first is that my love of tech is lacking lately, scrolling through my twitter I still engage with some tech accounts, and tech posts, when the iOS 14 beta came out, I added it right away, and I have added chat groups there in iMessage now, I don’t need any other chat apps, which was an issue for me before, switching around, on my iPhone I have mainly switched to stock apps, and don’t have a lot on my phone anymore, and I don’t find myself having much to say in the group chats anymore, my homescreen isn’t super interesting, there haven’t been any new apps that blow my skirt up, I’m not rushing out paying for subscriptions I don’t need, I have cancelled them all, pretty much, I’m not really downloading the latest apps, I’m just feeling meh about tech these days, and I’m not sure if and when that will change, I will always love tech, but also the fact that this year I’m not looking forward to the new phone, and I’m seriously considering keeping my 11 pro and watch series 5 for another year or so, says a lot to me, that would have never happened before! I will still write and post about tech but prolly not that much, my interests have shifted.

I have gotten back into basketball and UFC again in a large way, I have really gotten back into fitness, set some serious goals, and I’m starting to crush them, I have been spending a lot more time with my wife and kids, connecting with them on deeper levels then before, I have also been focusing on making friends and maintaining relationships, so those are the things that interest me a lot now.

I have been going to counseling to deal with childhood and early adult issues that affect all of my relationships and I feel like I’m growing as a person and a husband and a father and a friend.

I will be continuing with this blog as I feel it’s important to me, but what I’m saying is that it’s not going to be primarily tech focused, I may write about some workouts or fitness goals, I may write about my thoughts about this weekends UFC fight, or any UFC fight, or about professional or college basketball, or some awesome sneakers that are coming out or for that matter I may get personal and write about stuff that has happened to me in the past, and how I deal with it, or write about stuff in my life, or maybe just post photos of fun times.

Basically I’m saying that I’m changing, my interests are changing, and my writing will be changing, and I hope you all stick around for it, because I appreciate all of you guys that read this!

iMessage and I

Around 10 years or so ago, I got invited into a group DM chat with some people I met on Twitter, I had always loved apple, tech and apps etc, but this was really the first time I was exposed to the many others that shared my same interests.

That also ignited something inside me that had wanted to create my own group like that, my own chat community, so I did.

I believe the first one started in twitter itself as well, or possibly it may have been slack, either way over the next ten years or so, the group I had created moved and tried every chat app out there. I mean ALL of them. Every time a new chat app came out, we tried it, anytime a chat app had an update, we tried it.

In doing so I realized that running a chat group with many different people was a lot harder then it looked, especially for someone who has some anxiety issues.

I would get DMs from people, “hey I don’t like telegram, let’s try WhatsApp”, or “hey, let’s use slack it has all the different channels”, or “hey, that’s cool if you guys wanna use WhatsApp but I won’t because I don’t like Facebook”, or “hey Twitter is cool but I use a third party twitter app so I can’t see group chats”.

Day in and day out there would be at least one person bitching or adding comments, and then as I had anxiety I would just listen to that one person and move the whole group, or shut everything down, I have done that more times than I can count, people will message me and say where did the group go, and I have deleted it, alienating people and featuring the groups, even though that didn’t really do much to help my anxiety because then everyone would message me, “where did the group go?”, “you’re selfish, why not just delete the apps off your phone?” And I was made to fell why should I worry about my needs when I could just delete the app and keep the groups open, the truth is when I did that, I would get FOMO fear of missing out and then eventually come back.

So here I was last weekend, in the same boat, people wanting to use one app or another, still getting DMs etc, my anxiety through the roof, in addition to everything else that’s going on in society right now.

So that’s when it hit me, I messaged a few people I talk to in the chat groups all the time, and I said I wanna have an iMessage group are you interested. And for the most part people said yes, there were a few I was interested in keeping more contact with that said no, but there is nothing I can do about that.

I started using it on sat and I have to say it’s been great, I can still keep in touch with the people I talk with most often, and being a small group it’s easy to stay caught up, everyone’s talking, and participating, because in most large chat groups if you have 300 people only a few chat, most just consume, and the ones that only consume and don’t participate and usually the first ones to complain about something, or have an issue, so nobody is bitching about moving from this app to another, and it’s working great.

I should have done this years ago, the only small issues are supposedly being addressed in iOS 14, a chat marker, so you know where you left off and the ability to @ people in a group chat.

So in closing, I won’t be using chat apps anymore, im much less stressed, I’m not anxious that I’m missing out on anything, and I’m glad I have met all of you guys, I’ll be talking with you via iMessage or via Twitter in the future.

Thoughts

I have been super busy trying to prepare for quarantine the last couple of weeks. I haven’t been writing much, I haven’t been on my social media, or engaging in my chatgroups as much as normal. I will be trying to change this behavior ASAP. I still have a lot of topics I would like to write about, and I’m working on those now, and I’m starting to interact more in other places. I hope you all stay safe in this challenging time.

Chat App Chaos

For years I have hosted a group chat about Apple, apps, tech, homescreens etc. The group has changed names plenty of time, and has changed members quite a few times over the years as well.

It has also changed apps that we use a lot, probably more times then users would like.

We have tried them all, from flash in the pan like that yahoo messenger, to Twitter group DM chats, to skype, Slack, Google Hangouts, the other google chat app, Groupme, Signal, iMessage, you name it.

It really always boils down to two apps and two distinct sets of people who love each app and won’t use the other.

There are the Telegram users, Telegram is an amazing app, it does everything you want a chat app to do and more, the negatives for myself is connectivity, it has that problem a lot, and sometimes I think it’s going to suffer from bloat, because I don’t think it knows whether it wants to be a fun social chat app or a more business focused chat app. Looks wise it’s beautiful and functionally soild though. The users who use this app generally don’t like to use a different app.

Then there are the WhatsApp users, WhatsApp is a solid app, it is the most used chat app around, it is fully featured, the look is a little dated, but it’s rock solid and I have never had any connectivity issues. It’s very slow to implement new features, and it’s biggest turn off to people is that it’s owned by Facebook. Which admittedly can be a huge turn off to some people who don’t use Facebook or are worried about privacy issues.

I tried using a Twitter DM as a happy medium but so many people hate the stock twitter app and use a 3rd party Twitter app that that wasn’t a solution either.

It always essentially boils down to these two groups of people who prefer one app or the other. And then inevitably it gets stressful to me, because when people are just chatting in a group that I have worked hard to put together what no one sees is the DMs from people saying I wish we were in Telegram, I wish we were in WhatsApp, I wish we were in Slack, then I get in my own head and think, would we get more people here? Or would we get more people there and I get stressed out and I just shut down. I say fuck it, it’s not worth my mental stress worrying about all these people when I have other things in my life to worry about, why let something fun be stressful. So then I delete all the chats and vanish for a while, then wash, rinse, repeat. It’s a never ending cycle.

What I realized now, is that maybe I will end the group chats altogether, not right now but someday, and that I can’t make everyone happy. But I am going to pick an app to stick with and keep that group and for people who wanna join great, and for people who don’t I’ll see ya some other way. And if you DM me about wishing you were in another app or bashing the current app, I’m gonna delete ya, and unfriend ya, because it’s not worth my mental stress.

It Always Feels Better When We Meal Prep

We meal prep virtually every week, I can’t remember a time in the last year when we didn’t, except for last week, it totally threw me off, we had a hectic Sunday and just couldn’t get time, and with 2 small kids, activities for them and work for us, Sunday’s is the only time we have to meal prep.

Last week my week was totally thrown off, I had to adjust my daily routine to try and scramble to make something before work, or stress about what I was going to get at lunchtime, and for two of us eating out for lunch 5 days a week can be quite expensive, there are healthy options, my work is right by a subway so that’s what I chose, but doing that three times last week was a little much.

So this week we got right back at it, meal prepped and ready to go, it just puts my mind at ease that I know we’re spending no extra cash, and that I know exactly what I’m putting in my body, as I am very much in the middle of a body recomposition and my focus has become very much into working out, being active and eating healthy.

So now I will relax Sunday night knowing our meal prep is done and that we are back in our weekly routine

Health And Fitness Apps

Over the years I have tried to use a number of health and fitness apps only to realize the things they were trying to get me to do I did already.

I have tried to keep Waterminder installed multiple times over the years, it’s an amazing app and top of its game for what it does but what I realized is I already drink a ton of water a day and when it reminded me I never acted on it I just swiped away the notification and then eventually deleted the app because I found it redundant.

I have tried many calorie tracking apps over the years Calory , My Fitnesspal, Lose It! , all with the same result, I would never remember to log my food and it was a tedious process, again, all great apps but I realized I meal prepped every week and I ate as healthy as I could so I didn’t really need that either, also as I am eliminating subscriptions that was another one I could remove.

I tried Zero which is an intermittent fasting app, again great design and very useful for a lot of people but what I found was that I ate at dinner every night and then didn’t eat again till breakfast every day, and it was consistent, so I didn’t really need an app to track that.

I tried Oak which is a meditation app, it’s great but for me I found 20 or 30 mins of yoga when I was feeling stressed worked out great for me.

I tried Zones which is an intensity tracking app, again, I got all the same data pretty much in workouts and sometimes I had issues with syncing, so I deleted that as well

I tried most of the heart tracking apps, some were good others not so much but I found that the heart rate app and the info in the health app was sufficient for me, I suffer from indigestion induced AFib so that’s an important one for me and When I am in AFIb I download Heartwatch but it hasn’t been updated in over a year so I don’t really keep it downloaded unless I’m in AFib.

I tried all the sleeping tracking apps as well and AutoSleep is by far the best IMO I have that downloaded and will keep it downloaded, I check and use it daily.

So for me I found that the less apps I have the easier my life is to manage, and that I kept apps around for no reason and didn’t really use them, and that I can manage a lot of health related things without relying on an app. Others are not that way, and these are all great apps and if they help you that’s fantastic but I’m finding I actually use less and less apps on a daily basis so I have been purging the ones that are non useful for me.

Instagram

I have recently shifted spending a lot of time on tech to spending a lot of time researching health related items, workouts, healthy eating, sleep effects.

In my research my wife pointed me to Instagram, now for my social media use people know I’m a twitterholic, and I used Facebook to keep up with local events and my family and friends, instagram never usually had a place for me, it always fell kind of in the middle, the place where I posted pictures of nights out or my kids, I never thought it could be a place for research.

So I started looking and I found many accounts that I now follow, workout routines, health coaches, healthy cooking and it turns out it’s amazing for that. I would have never guessed. Now I check my instagram more often than my facebook and my wife and I are always sending each other something we have seen on there.

Taking A Break From Chat Apps

I recently decided to take a break from extra chat apps, I deleted them off my phone, Slack is gone, Telegram is gone, and WhatsApp is gone.

The reason is I’m really getting focused on fitness and health related things, and even if I put a chat app on a second page or in a folder I can’t stop checking It randomly.

I also find myself spending time in them that could be much better spent elsewhere, and I have noticed myself being not as present with my family or what’s going on because I’m wondering what was said by who, etc.

By deleting them I no longer have that option, and it’s a great fit for me, I still am using Twitter and iMessage, that’s plenty for the time being.
